Troy is committed to working with existing businesses to help them prosper and grow, and to help new businesses discover the exciting opportunities that are available in Troy. We help businesses access a responsive network to support growth and development.

By addressing common business concerns, the community ensures a healthier future for itself and its business partners. Businesses that stay competitive are more likely to remain in the community and possibly expand. We look to establish a broad-based community coalition to sustain long term economic development efforts.


The BR&E Strategy focuses on both short-term and long-term objectives.

Short-Term Objectives

  • Demonstrate support for local businesses.
  • Help solve immediate business concerns.
  • Foster communication between businesses and local, county and state officials.

Long-Term Objectives

  • Increase local businesses' ability to compete in the local and surrounding economy.
  • Establish and implement a strategic plan for economic development.
  • Build our community's capacity for sustainable growth and development.

Procedure & Results

As part of the Troy Economic Development Plan, a survey has been developed to gather information from the business community so that local city government could gain insight into how it can better respond to the needs of business and business owners. The survey is an instrument by which the business community can voice its concerns and issues, but also to provide a communication tool to share ideas and plans. This is a joint effort to create a strong business climate in Troy where everyone wins. We were seeking feedback from business owners who are on the front line of business creation as an important part of building relationships with the city and businesses.

The survey consisted of 45 questions and was sent to local business from February 22, 2012 through March 15, 2012. The process involved calling approximately 211 local businesses in order to obtain contact information and permission to send them a survey. There were a total of 105 surveys emailed and 13 surveys delivered to business. We received 60 electronic responses and seven physically returned surveys. This represents a 56.8% response rate from our business community. The Troy businesses included in the sample were drawn from a list of Troy-Maryville-St. Jacob Chamber of Commerce members and from a list of Troy businesses who are non-members.
