The
department's district spans over sixty-four square miles.
The area includes three major interstates: Interstate 70,
Interstate 55 and Interstate 270. TFPD responds to an average
of 250 calls per year. The department also responds to mutual
aid calls in each of the neighboring communities. The Troy
Fire Protection District (TFPD) is a member of the Madison
County Fire Fighters Association.
History
The Troy Fire Protection District's roots go back to 1915
when the City of Troy purchased the first motorized fire apparatus.
The Ford vehicle, purchased from the American La France manufacturing
company, had two 25 gallon chemical tanks attached to it.
Before this purchase, the fire fighting equipment consisted
of three 50-gallon chemical tanks mounted on two wheels. When
a fire occurred, firemen drew the tanks down the street.
In 1927, the department was informally reorganized with the
election of a Fire Chief and the formation of the fourteen
man department. The Troy Fire Protection District was formally
organized in May 1957.
In
1961, the City purchased an International Midshift Pumper
to protect the district at a cost of $17,000.00. The latest
acquisition is a 1998 Pierce Saber at a cost of $248,000.
The department has a trained, professional 31 member team:
Fire Chief, Assistant Chief, eight Captains (two training
officers) and twenty-two fire fighters. Five trustees oversee
the management of the department and provide budgeting direction
for the operation and maintenance of the district.
