What is the Police Explorer Program all about?
In 2001 the Troy Police Department started its first
Police Explorer program which is chartered with the
Boy Scouts of America. The Explorer Program introduces
young adults to the many varied opportunities available
in a career in law enforcement. The Police Explorer
program is designed to give the Explorer a working
knowledge of police functions and a feeling of a social
awareness and responsibility, and at the same time,
stimulate interest in law enforcement practices as
well as a strong code of ethics.
How
do I become a Police Explorer?
The minimum qualifications
to be a Police Explorer are as follows:
- Must
be between the ages of 14 and 21.
- Must
maintain a "C" or better grade point average.
- Must
be willing to volunteer a minimum of 10 hours a
month of service.
- Must
have a good moral character and good background.
- Must
live within the Triad School District.
What
activities do the Explorers get involved in?
Within the following years we experienced many different
aspects of law enforcement. The Explorer post has
been introduced to guest speakers from the Department
Alcohol, Tobacco, & Firearms, and also from the
Madison County Coroner's Office. They have experienced
hands-on training for traffic stops, building searches,
tactical and self-defense procedures, as well as a
multitude of other training. The Explorer Post has
also been very active in assisting the Troy Police
Department with large events that involve parking
or directing traffic as well as the Fingerprinting
Children Identification program.
